How to File a Texas Public Information Act Request
Texas law gives you the right to access government records, with certain exceptions. The Texas Public Information Act (TPIA) requires a governmental body to release information in response to your written request.
Your request can be submitted by mail, email or in person. Certain types of information are excluded: confidential, personnel or information related to investigations. In order to exclude information, the governmental body must request a ruling from the Open Records Division of the Office of Attorney General. You must be notified if this request has been made.
If your request can’t be met within 10 days, the governmental body must notify you when it will be released.
An estimate of the cost to fill your request must be sent to you in advance.
